Flemish nationalists reject independence

While nationalists in Catalonia keep their heads buried in the sand against any suggestion that independence would involve leaving the EU, despite repeated statements from Brussels that this would be the case, the Spanish newspaper El País reports that the Flemish nationalist party N-VA has abandoned its claim to independence.

As one of the founders of the movement explains: “There’s no majority here favourable to independence”. And he strengthens his argument with a further point that strikes to the heart of a very European society: the perspective of an independent Flanders being excluded, for an indeterminate time from the European Union.

More from El País. I can find no English source.
